The name "Maruthua" was derived from the renowned mountains of the Western Ghats, eminently known as the Marunthuvazh Malai and more commonly known as Maruthuva Malai. Maruthuva Malai is the abode of medicinal herbs, and according to ancient mythology, it is believed to be a fragment of the Sanjeevi Mountain, which fell down and was carried by Hanuman from Mahendragiri to Lanka for healing the fatal wounds of Lakshmana, the brother of Rama, who is the legendary hero in the ancient Sanskrit epic Ramayana. This mountain is understood to be rich in herbs that embrace significant medicinal value and form the origin of various herbal flora used in traditional Ayurvedic treatments today.
