Abhyangam is an Ayurvedic way of massage with specific herbal oils to nourish and revitalize the body. It is a part of Purvakarma or preparatory measure (pre-treatment before Panchakarma). The physician will decide the suitability of the treatment for the patient and also the oils ideal for him/her depending on the history of illnesses encountered if any, or the physical characteristics and constitution of the body.
Method:
The patient will lie down on the special table (Droni) and Ayurvedic oils are slowly warmed up and gently massaged over the skin. Abhyangam is done in seven standard positions. The duration of this treatment is around 45 minutes to one hour, followed by a bath using green gram powder to remove the oil. Abhyangam is done for either a single day or for any number of days as prescribed by the physician.
Therapeutic value:
• Massaging is a means to exercise the nervous system
• It simultaneously calms and strengthens the nervous system
• Tones the muscles and improves circulation of internal fluids
• Improves lymph flow, increases the production of white blood corpuscles
and antibodies, which provide more resistance against viruses and diseases.
In these ways, Abhyangam is a protector, preserver, and a rejuvenator, increasing self-confidence and will power.
